17 Students and Police Officer Injured in Accident
20 people, including 17 students and a police officer, were injured in a collision involving a school bus and a truck in Long Island, New York.
The bus, from Longwood School District, was transporting the junior high school girls basketball team back to their junior high school.
The accident happened at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday night in Middle Island. The box truck involved in the collision, driven by Steven Kvit, 54, of Yaphank, was traveling northbound on County Road 21 when he collided with the bus, driven by Claudia Carson, 49, of East Islip. The front end of the truck was badly damaged, and many of the bus’ windows were smashed.
Both the bus and truck drivers and all the students were transported to the hospital. None of the victims involved suffered serious injuries.
After the accident, a police officer who was directing traffic around the accident scene was struck by a car. The officer suffered a serious, but non life-threatening back injury. The car’s driver was not charged with any crime in the accident.
