A popular and avid bicyclist was fatally injured in a Washington traffic accident Wednesday.

Kevin Daniel Black, 39, was bicycling when he was fatally hit by a van just before 9 a.m. Wednesday on 24th Avenue Northwest near Northwest 64th Street in north Ballard. Black was attempting to pass the van on the left when it turned and hit him, causing multiple injuries, according to police. Black suffered multiple injuries and was transported to Harborview Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Black was a University of Washington molecular neurobiologist who researched molecules that produce electrical signals in the brain, and a dedicated father for his two young daughters.

The bicycling accident was not the first for the family. Last summer, Bryan Black, Kevin Black’s brother, was hit by a truck and thrown over its hood while riding in Austin, Texas, but survived.
