A bicyclist died Monday evening from injuries he suffered hours earlier when he hit by a car in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Around 6:20 a.m., Monday, Leroy Martinez, 62, rode his bicycle to the intersection of Navajo Street and Indiana Avenue. As Martinez began crossing the intersection northbound, in a crosswalk, he suddenly reversed his direction and came back southbound in the crosswalk.

A 23-year-old man, driving a Mazda westbound on Indiana Avenue, did not at first notice Martinez’s sudden change of direction and was unable to stop before he hit the bicycle and Martinez, police said.

Martinez was transported to an area hospital in critical condition suffering from a broken leg and head trauma. He was placed on life-support, and was pronounced dead several hours later.

Police said a preliminary investigation suggests the bicyclist was most likely at fault in the accident.
