Bicyclist in Critical Condition After Hit By Vehicle

A male bicyclist suffered critical injuries when he was struck by a vehicle Wednesday night in Townsend, said Blount County Sheriff James Berrong.

Bryan K. Swafford, 32, of Happy Valley Road, Tallassee, was bicycling eastbound on Lovers Lane when he was struck head-on by Kathy Lou Day, 53, of Clark Drive, Townsend, who was traveling westbound in a 1991 Nissan Sentra.

Day fled the scene of the accident but was later found by Townsend Police officers on Webb Road not long after the incident.

Swafford was transported by Rural/Metro Ambulance Service to the University of Tennessee Medical Center and was upgraded to serious condition Thursday.

Day was charged with leaving the scene of the accident and driving on a revoked license.

The Blount County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the accident.
