Bicyclist Killed in Hit-And-Run Accident

A bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run accident near Sandoval early Sunday morning.

Jim Gafney, 65, of Chula Vista, California, was bicycling eastbound on U.S. 50 when he was rear-ended by a vehicle driven by Leon K. Marcum of Centralia, Illinois around 12:40 a.m. Sunday.

Marcum fled the accident scene but was later found. According to Marcum he saw the bicyclist but was unable to stop in time. He now faces a felony charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Gafney was riding to Washington D.C. to protest government bailouts in what he called the “Mad As Hell Bike Ride Across U.S.”
