A 5-year-old girl was injured Thursday when her backpack got caught on a school bus’s doors and was pulled over 30 feet down the road.

Police were able to retrieve a security video that caught the incident. The girl’s 7-year-old sister ran to the school bus when the driver stopped. The little girl was taken to a local hospital to receive treatment.

The girl’s father is considering suing for the incident. He was allegedly outraged when the school bus driver never stepped out to check on how the girl was after she had been dragged.

The school district is reviewing the video and fully investigating the accident.

Fifty people were killed in a plane crash late Thursday night, when a commuter airliner plunged into a suburban home about five miles from Buffalo Niagara International Airport in Buffalo, New York. All 49 people aboard the plane, and one person in the house, were killed in the crash.

“It was a direct hit,” Erie County Emergency Coordinator David Bissonette said at a televised news conference. “It’s remarkable that it only took one house. As devastating as that is, it could have wiped out the entire neighborhood.”

The Continental Connection Flight 3407 had departed from Newark, New Jersey, and was about five miles from Runway 3 at Buffalo Niagara International Airport when it suddenly took a nose dive into a single-family house below at 10:20 p.m. A woman and a child were able to escape the house with minor injuries. One person on the ground was killed, but it is unclear if they were inside the house.

The aircraft, a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 turboprop plane, a new aircraft in service since last April, was carrying 44 passengers, four crew members, and an off duty Continental Connection pilot.

Only minutes before the crash, air traffic controllers had a routine conversation with the female pilot, who had experience of 3,300 hours of flying time with the airline. There was no sign that anything was out of the ordinary and no call for help when communications ended.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board arrived Friday morning in Clarence, New York. The plane’s flight data recorders were recovered and will be sent to Washington for analysis. It is initially believed that weather was a factor in the accident. Skies were foggy and snowy; winds were about 17 mph at the time of the crash.

After the crash, the airport tower warned other planes to watch for icing on their aircrafts’ wings. “We’ve been picking up ice here for about the past 10 minutes,” one pilot stated.

Officials this morning said they were working to control the fire which delayed their investigation. “It was a major fire and explosion,” stated National Transportation Safety Board member Steve Chealander at a televised morning news conference. “There’s a lot of carnage.”

A US Airways jet crash-landed in the Hudson River in New York Thursday afternoon when it lost power after apparently hitting a flock of birds. Fortunately, everyone aboard is off the plane and alive, said officials.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane was an Airbus A320 with 148 passengers and four or five crew. There are no passengers remaining on the plane, but it is unknown if there are any serious injuries or not, explained FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown.

US Airways Flight 1549 was en route to Charlotte, N.C., when it lost power after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport after 3 p.m. EST.

“The engine blew. There was fire everywhere and it smelled like gas,” explained passenger Jeff Kolodjay of Connecticut. “People were bleeding all over. We hit the water pretty hard. It was scary.”

The plane survived the crash and remained floating in the river while passengers were rescued by standing on the wings as they waited for boats to transport them to land. City fire and police, U.S. Coast Guard units, and rescue boats arrived immediately, along with as many as eight ferries and local water taxi services helping to rescue passengers and dropping life jackets into the water.

“I saw the plane coming in very low but under control, it splashed down in the water. Once it cleared it was still floating on its belly,” explained Alex Whittaker who witnessed the crash from a Times Square Building. “The doors opened and we could see life rafts and we could just about see a few people climbing out onto the water.”

Brown said they were investigating reports that the Airbus 320 lost power after it hit a flock of birds, disabling at least one engine.

US Airways said in a statement it was investigating the incident.

So here we go again. Another Salmonella outbreak that people need to be concerned about!

Right now, the CDC is working with public health officials in several states, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) – Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate an ongoing outbreak of sickness tied to Salmonella Typhimurium.

As of Friday, January 9, 2009, 399 persons infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from 42 states. The number of ill persons identified in each state is as follows:

Alabama (1)

Arizona (8)

Arkansas (3)

California (55)

Colorado (9)

Connecticut (6)

Georgia (5)

Hawaii (1)

Idaho (10)

Illinois (4)

Indiana (3)

Iowa (1)

Kansas (2)

Kentucky (3)

Maine (3)

Maryland (7)

Massachusetts (39)

Michigan (20)

Minnesota (30)

Missouri (8)

Nebraska (1)

New Hampshire (10)

New Jersey (13)

New York (12)

Nevada (6)

North Carolina (1)

North Dakota (10)

Ohio (53)

Oklahoma (2)

Oregon (5)

Pennsylvania (12)

Rhode Island (3)

South Dakota (2)

Tennessee (9)

Texas (5)

Utah (3)

Vermont (4)

Virginia (12

Washington (11)

West Virginia (2)

Wisconsin (3)

Wyoming (2).

Among the 380 persons with dates available, the Salmonella illnesses began between September 3 and December 31, 2008, with most illnesses beginning after October 1, 2008. Patients range in age from less than 1 to 98 years; 49% are female. Among persons with available information, 18% were hospitalized.

So what is causing this Salmonella Outbreak?

Although not confirmed yet that this national outbreak is directly related, officials from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) just issued a product advisory after MDA’s preliminary laboratory testing indicated the presence of Salmonella bacteria in a 5-pound container of King Nut brand creamy peanut butter.

These 5 pound King Nut peanut butter containers are not known to be distributed for retail sale in grocery stores, thankfully or the numbers would be higher. State officials are urging establishments who may have the product on hand to avoid serving it, pending further instructions as the investigation progresses.

State officials discovered the contamination as a result of product testing initiated after an MDH epidemiological investigation implicated King Nut creamy peanut butter as a likely source of Salmonella infections in Minnesota residents. The Minnesota cases have the same genetic fingerprint as the cases in the national outbreak mentioned above. Laboratory results for the product sample have not officially been linked to this national outbreak, but the chances are high that these Salmonella outbreaks are directly related. We will find out next week when additional tests will be completed.

This isn’t the first peanut butter Salmonella outbreak in recent years. In 2007, there was a Great Value and Peter Pan peanut butter outbreak that sickened people in 47 states.

Salmonella Symptoms

Salmonella symptoms can be very painful. The majority of people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. Infection is usually diagnosed by culture of a stool sample. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Although most people recover without treatment, severe infections may occur. Infants, elderly persons, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely than others to develop severe illness. When severe infection occurs, Salmonella may spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. If you feel you may have Salmonella poisening, you should get medical attention right away. In addition, if you want to file a lawsuit against the party responsible, you will need to be diagnosed with Salmonella by a physician.

Maryland State Police trooper Philip Willoughby was involved in an accident that killed two people and apparently will not face charges. The accident occured when Willoughby was heading to a crash scene. He was traveling around 57 miles per hour with his lights and siren on when the accident occurred. It occurred in a 35mph zone.

State police say the results of an internal investigation of the August accident were forwarded to Talbot County prosecutors, and no criminal or traffic charges were filed against the trooper.

The victims in the accident on St. Michaels Road were an elderly brother and sister in their 80’s, Maynard Lowery and his sister Alma (88 and 87 years young respectively).
