Drugs Involved in Fatal Two-Vehicle Accident

A man was killed in a two-vehicle accident in Southampton in Suffolk County Wednesday.

Louis Spero, 60, of Riverhead was driving a pickup truck eastbound on Sunrise Highway when he was rear-ended by a vehicle driven by Paul Nelson, 35, of Riverhead between exists 62 and 63.

Spero’s truck lost control and rolled over into the center median. Spero, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Nelson’s vehicle also lost control and came to a stop in the center median.

Nelson was arrested for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance seventh degree, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the first degree.
