A one-vehicle accident in Surprise, Arizona left one man dead and four injured early Thursday.

The accident occurred at 9:15 a.m. at Loop 303 at Greenway Road in Surprise while a 71-year-old martial arts coach and four other passengers, aged 14, 18, 18 and 21, were on their way to a tournament in Las Vegas, said Sgt. Paul Forch of the state Department of Public Safety.

The man died at the scene. An 18-year-old male was ejected from the vehicle and broke his leg, Forch said. Two of the male passengers remained trapped inside the vehicle just after the accident, said Kevin Pool, assistant fire chief in Surprise. All of the injuries to the passengers were fortunately non-life threatening. Two of the passengers were taken by helicopters to local hospitals.

All that is known for sure of how the accident occurred is that the vehicle partially left the roadway to the right and then came back onto the roadway. The vehicle was possibly overcorrected which led it to spin off the road way to the east, said Forch.

The accident is still being investigated by DPS.
