The wrong-way driver was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes in a silver Pontiac when the accident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Monday near the Carefree Highway exit, according to DPS Lt. Jim Warriner.

The wrong-way driver collided with three other vehicles, including a SUV carrying a family of four. The male driver of the SUV was taken to a Valley hospital where he was pronounced dead. Three other occupants, including two young girls, suffered critical injuries and were airlifted to area hospitals.

About four other passengers in the two other vehicles suffered non life-threatening injuries.

It is unknown why the driver was traveling in the wrong direction. An autopsy will be performed.

Investigators are in the middle of attempting to determine the exact cause of the accident, and if the unidentified woman was injured prior to the final cause of death.

Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves says the woman was crawling across the westbound HOV lane on U.S. 60 when she was hit by an SUV at 4:47 a.m. She was than struck by another vehicle that then rear-ended the SUV as it braked. A third car that was trying to avoid the collision ended up running the woman over as well.

Graves says investigators believe the woman was injured prior to being hit but do not know how she ended up on the freeway.

According to witnesses, a speeding car failed to stop at a red light and hit an ambulance in a Tucson intersection, said police. The impact of the crash knocked the ambulance over onto its side and both the car and ambulance then struck a pickup truck that was stopped at the light.

A 71-year-old man traveling with his friend who was the patient being transported in the ambulance was killed at the accident scene, stated police. Two medics and the patient in the ambulance suffered minor injuries.

The 20-year-old driver of the car and a 25-year-old passenger were also killed in the accident. Two other passengers were transported to a hospital, one with life-threatening injuries and one with serious injuries. The 18-year-old driver of the pickup suffered minor injuries.

It is being investigated if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The woman has been identified as Dianna Moran, 66, of Washington state, according to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office.

Moran was a passenger in a 1997 Suzuki four-door passenger vehicle driven by Earnest Moran, 69, of Washington State that collided with a gray 2001 Toyota pickup truck, driven by Edward Moore, 79, of Sanger, California. The collision occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the 9800 block of Fortuna Road, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Toyota was traveling southbound on Fortuna Road when it swerved off the roadway to the left, and in returning to the roadway struck the passenger’s side door of the northbound Suzuki, YCSO said. The driver of the Suzuki attempted to avoid the accident by swerving to the west side of the road, but was unsuccessful, YCSO said.

Dianna Moran was transported by Care Flight to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, YCSO said. Earnest Moran was transported to YRMC for treatment of minor injuries, said YCSO.

Moore did not suffer any injuries in the collision but was taken to YRMC as a precaution, said YCSO.

The accident is under investigation. Alcohol does not seem to have played a role in the collision.

The soldier’s vehicle crossed the median on Interstate 10 near Casa Grande and collided head-on with another vehicle, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Both drivers were killed at the scene of the collision.

The soldier’s passenger, also a Fort Huachuca soldier, is in stable condition and expected to survive from the injuries he suffered in the crash.

Both soldiers were assigned to a warrior transition unit, which helps injured soldiers focus on healing before returning to duty or transitioning to the work force outside the military.

The identity of the soldiers has not been released.

The baby was expected to survive, Yuma County sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Eben Bratcher said, but the mother, 19-year-old Karen Martinez of Yuma, suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident at 3E and.

Shortly before 11 p.m., Karen Martinez, 19, of Yuma, was traveling northbound on Avenue 3E in a Nissan passenger car when she was hit by a southbound Pontiac passenger car that had crossed the center line at County 14-1/2 Street, the sheriff’s office said.

Martinez, who suffered life-threatening injuries, was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where the caesarian was performed and she was listed in critical condition, the sheriff’s office said.

The driver of the Nissan, Jorge Martinez, 21, of Yuma, was taken to YRMC with minor injuries.

The driver of the Pontiac, Imelda Sandoval, 37, of San Luis, sustained minor injuries to the legs and feet, but declined to be taken to YRMC for treatment. A passenger in that vehicle, Efrain Picazo, 45, of San Luis, was uninjured, YCSO said.

The accident is under investigation. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor, YCSO stated. No citations had been issued as of Friday morning.

The 30-seat bus was full of Chinese tourists headed to Las Vegas after a trip to the Grand Canyon. When the bus began to drift off the roadway the driver overcorrected and the bus crossed two traffic lanes, into a gravel median, and then rolled over at least once before coming to rest on its side. The bus did not have seatbelts and most passengers were thrown out of the vehicle’s windows. The accident occurred just after 3 p.m. Friday.

At least two of the victims will most likely need some long-term medical care and are still in critical condition at University Medical Center. Sunday, an 8-year-old boy was released from UMC, two others listed in fair condition, and two other victims who are at Sunrise Hospital had their conditions upgraded to fair.

Monday California regulators suspended the charter certificate of the company that owned the tour bus. Six months earlier, a federal review showed the company had insufficient drug and alcohol testing and policies for drivers.

A 50-year-old woman and a 60-year-old woman suffered from the most serious injuries and were rushed to local trauma centers, stated Phoenix fire Capt. Shelly Jamison. One of the women appeared to have potentially life-threatening injuries. The five others involved suffered less serious injuries and were transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and county hospitals.

It appears that one of the drivers of the three vehicles may have turned the wrong way and began driving the wrong way into traffic at about 9 p.m. on 16th Street just north of Interstate 17 in Phoenix, said authorities.

Nearly 20 Phoenix firefighters responded to the accident scene because of the high number of victims involved. The accident was considered a first-alarm medical call.

None of the Fowler Elementary School District students that were on the bus suffered from serious injuries. 26 people from the various 12 vehicles that were hit during the accident were injured and a few were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, said Phoenix fire officials.

The driver lost control on 67th Avenue around Interstate 10, resulting in a mile long accident scene between Van Buren Street and McDowell Road.

It’s not immediately clear why the bus driver lost control, said Police Officer James Holmes.
The driver, who is unidentified, appeared unharmed, despite mixed reports from students and first responders about his condition at the time of the wreck.

“He accelerated and either passed out or lost control of the bus,” said Mark Faulkner, Phoenix Fire division chief.
The accident continues to be under investigation.

The accident occurred after 3:30 p.m. at milepost 145 on northbound US 93. Three people with serious injuries were taken by helicopter to Phoenix-area hospitals and three others were transported to Kingman hospitals.

All lanes except one were closed to northbound traffic on the busy US 93 near the State Route 71 junction as officials continue their investigation of the crash.
