Utah Man Dies in Three-Car Accident
A man died Tuesday afternoon in a three-car traffic accident on Highland Drive in Salt Lake City, Utah, police said.
James Lowe, 55, of West Jordan, was driving a sedan northbound on Highland Drive in front of Cottonwood Mall at 3:30 p.m. when he crossed the median and crashed into a sports utility vehicle carrying one adult and five children, said Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Lt. Don Hutson said.
About six witnesses say they saw him swerving in and out of the appropriate northbound lane before he crossed the median and swerved into oncoming southbound traffic, then hitting the SUV head-on, said Hudson.
The impact of the head-on collision made Lowe’s sedan spin into the other oncoming lane where another SUV was hit broadside on the driver’s side.
Lowe sustained traumatic injuries severe enough to cause his death, but it is a possibility the man may have died before his car hit the two vehicles, said Hutson. Lowe’s wife told officers that he suffered from diabetes.
All six people in the first SUV were taken to two nearby hospitals as a precaution. All three people in the second SUV, one adult and two children, were treated at the scene.
